History of the AMX30 Pluton missile tank
The Pluton was a mobile missile launcher on an AMX 30 chassis, designed for nuclear deterrence during the Cold War. It replaced the American Honest John missile. Pluto and Hades are, in mythology, the Latin and Greek names of the God of Hell. Centuries after the fall of Olympus, Pluto was the name given to the first French pre-strategic nuclear device, Hades to the second. The Pluton is a solid-propulsion supersonic missile.
It has a range of up to 120 km, and an on-board inertial system ensures precision targeting and operational safety, guaranteeing autonomy and invulnerability to jamming. The launch vehicle was a modified AMX 30 tank chassis. An auxiliary motor was used to provide the necessary power without the tank's engine running. A manipulator arm was used to load the motor and warhead onto the tank. The missile had a range of 17 to 120 km, with an accuracy of 200 to 400m.
