History of the Allis Chalmers M4 artillery tractor
In 1942, the American army urgently needed a fully tracked artillery tractor to tow the Long Tom, a standard 155m gun. While International Harvester proposed its T20 and T21 prototypes, Allis Chalmers responded with the T9 and T9E1, based on an M3 Stuart chassis.
These were selected despite their greater weight, and went into production the following year under the name 18 ton Hight Speed Tractor.
