History of the 80 mm mortar Mod. 34 AMR(f)
Of the 200 AMR 35 vehicles in service with the French army, the Germans recovered a few dozen units. A pragmatic recycling solution was the AMR (f) mortar carrier made by installing in place of the turret a superstructure made of 10 mm thick steel plates and bolting the heavy mortar model 34. A 4-cylinder Renault engine, 82 hp, took this 9-ton machine to 50 km/h.
The 80 mm Rheinmetall Model 34 mortar weighed 57 kg, the smooth core tube measured 1.143 m. Seven types of shells could be fired. Thus, the Wgr shell. 34 of 8 cm came out of the tube at a speed of 170 m/s, had a weight of 3.5 kg – for 553 grams of explosive – and the maximum range was 2400 m. This weapon was produced in 5 years and seven months in more than 69,000 copies. The 4-man crew could use the mortar outside the vehicle if necessary, because the standard base plate was carried.
