Whippet

Ce véhicule dessiné par Sir William Tritton fut produit à 200 exemplaires à partir d'octobre 1917 chez Foster & Co. Conçu en tant que char de cavalerie, le Whippet pesait 14 tonnes (blindage maxi : 14 mm) et filait à un peu plus de 13 km/h. Originalité toute " british " : c'était un char bimoteur : deux " Taylor " quatre cylindres refroidis par air de 45 cv rendaient ce véhicule très pointu à conduire : un moteur par chenille à maîtriser. Les 318 litres d'essence autorisaient un rayon d'action de 65 km seulement.
Trois à quatre hommes s'entassaient dans le Whippet Mk. A : un chef de char, un conducteur et un ou deux mitrailleurs. L'armement couvrait tous les secteurs du blindé et consistait en trois à quatre mitrailleuses Hotchkiss de 7,7 mm approvisionnées au total à 5 400 coups.
Le baptême du feu eu lieu le 26 mars 1918, l'action d'éclat de 96 Whippet Mk. A à Amiens le 8 août 1918 permit de percer les lignes allemandes. Ce fut le meilleur char britannique.

Starting in October 1917, the total production of 200 units of this vehicle designed by Sir William Tritton was carried out by Foster & Co. Intended as a cavalry tank the Whippet Mk. A weighed 14 tons (max armour: 14 mm) and reached speeds in excess of 13 km/h. As it was a twin-engine tank: a pair of "Taylor" 4cylinders, air cooled motors yielding 45hp and each moving one track, made the driving of this vehicle an uncomfortable ordeal. 84 gallons of gasoline granted a range of only 40 miles.
Three to four men crammed in the Whippet Mk. A: a tank commander, a driver and one or two machine-gunners. Three to four 0.303 in. Hotchkiss machine-guns with 5,400 rounds made up the armament that covered all the sectors of the tank.
March 26th 1918 was the baptism of fire; the major action occurred the 8th of August 1918 in Amiens: 96 Whippet Mk. A punched through the German lines. It was the best British tank.
